I'm graduating in a week, and therefore definitely buying a new DD soon. Budget: around 15k. There are so many choices, but I need to be *somewhat* responsible here! The less money I spend on DD maintenance/gas, the more auto budget i'll have to put towards weekend project cars! FYI - I do my own basic maintenance/more
Requirements:
The No Way!! Section:
-FWD
- inline 4 cylinder motors
- convertibles
- anything without driver & passenger airbags
- nothing automatic, unless it has a v8. Yes I know, I'm a little nuts. But hey gas is under $3 here in 'murica!
- fuel mileage must be equal or better than my previous DD, which got 10-20 mpg depending on how much fun you were having (635csi)
Anything else is fair game! Have at it!! What would you DD for around 15k?

Why no inline-four or front-wheel drive?

I don't get it either. I believe this is exactly what he needs . It does meet the fuel economy suggestion!

Sounds like you should get a WRX.

hate both with a passion, sorry! I can't stand fwd, I love playing with the rear end via my right foot. I4s sound like nails on a chalkboard to me, never powerful or musical. To each their own though I respect everyone's tastes and there are plenty of I4/fwd i'd love to drive, just not own.

Yesss see you have hit one dilemma right on the head! Responsible vs. fast "cheap" german things. or silly old things. My compromise: e46/e90 330i 6 speed depending on my starting salary. Fun, sleek and nice places to sit in.

hahah that would be SO irresponsible. I love it. DDing a 911 is something I'd love to try, but at a lower mileage/higher price point of course

CL500 or S500. Also I suggest checking out Travish's recent post on the front page. Best Mercs available under 15k

Personally I would DD a newish Fiesta hatch for around $15k but since that doesn't meet the DD requirements. I would DD a 2003-2004 SVT Cobra (I DD'd a 95 Cobra for 12 years before I get a 4cyl DD)

I read the start of your post, and was going to suggest a late nineties/early thousands Honda Prelude, and save the rest of your budget. But if I remember rightly that would be both FWD and I4, and have no airbags. And in the US they're probably all autos, too.
Since that's out, the answer is clearly a Miata of the same vintage.

UGH I know haha it's almost inevitable, I live in New England, and I've driven two gens of WRX, which were both fun. Also the indestructible 01 outback I first learned to drive/snow hoon in back in the day totally infected me with the subaru bug. I was drooling over my very first 2015 wrx sighting today actually... dat ass! Anyway you are right about my need for a turbo H4, an 08/09 legacy 2.5 GT is high on my list.

Do it! In fact I daily drove my Cobra most of this year until about 2 months ago. My mileage wasn't that bad as well I got between 15mpg and 25 mpg depending how gentle I was with it.

Totally a possibility, but I think the econobox would drive me insane and it might be years before I can afford a 2nd garage spot aka sadly no projects

Yeah I have had the Subaru bug for 5 years now. I'm going to be getting an 02-05 WRX in the next few months after I sell off my BRZ.
